The Indiana Fever fell to the Las Vegas Aces 2-1 in the first round of the WNBA season, ending the best season thus far of superstar point guard Caitlin Clark’s career. The Fever will now look to retool the roster to make a deeper run in 2027, but the biggest question mark looming over any roster decisions is on the future of All-Star point guard Kelsey Mitchell.

Mitchell will be an unrestricted free agent and is widely seen as the biggest star on the market this offseason. Speaking with the media, Mitchell was candid about appreciating her time in Indiana, but also having to do whatever makes the most sense for her, and about the difficulties of playing on a team under the constant scrutiny Clark brings.

“If I showed y’all my DM’s about the hate, and all of the stuff that comes with being a professional athlete-but specifically being an Indiana Fever basketball player-it’s a lot that goes into that,” Mitchell said.

Clark addressed the situation in her exit interview on Thursday.

“So what is your reaction to her comments and also the attention this team receives because of you, but maybe not attention that you necessarily asked for?” a reporter asked Clark.

“I mean, you know, obviously I saw Kelsey’s comments, and I think as her teammate, like, it makes you upset because you care about your teammates so much and You don’t want any of them to go through something like that. And, you know, I think for the people that, you know, have followed me, obviously there is such a microscope on me, and that kind of comes with everybody else that I’ve been teammates with, whether that was my time at Iowa, whether that’s been here, and comes with a lot of really great things. And then at times there can be some negatives.

“I think as far as people that have used me to, you know, demonstrate racist rhetoric or hate or discrimination, that’s not something I stand for. That’s never been something I’ve stood for. For those of you that know me, you know that’s not what I’m about. It’s not how I was raised, so that’s really disappointing when people do that. I think it kind of gets into this larger discussion in mainstream sports of what people go through. I think just recently I saw, I think it was Coco Gauff that came out and kind of talked about her experience as well.

“So anytime I see something like that, you know, makes me upset, makes me sad, makes me really disappointed, you know, because that’s not who I am. It’s not what I’m about. I think for my teammates, obviously, there’s a lot of really great things that come with playing here too. And as far as Kelsey and our future with her, with the organization, I think, you know, she knows how much I love her.

“And we’ve talked since the season has ended, and there’s nobody I would want to share the backcourt with other than her. I think we had the best season of any backcourt in the WNBA in the league’s history, what we were able to do. And I often tell her, like, ‘You know, I feel like I have the best seat in the house every single night.’ I get to watch you do your thing and be right next to you and be on the other side of the ball with you.’

“So, you know, I know this organization is going to work our butt off to get her back. You know, we’re going to recruit her as hard as we can. Every player that is signed to a contract is going to recruit her as hard as we can.”

Clark finished by talking about how critical Mitchell is to the Fever.

“We need her. We love her. And I think more than anything, like, Kelsey’s a really great person and I love getting to be in the locker room with her. And obviously you guys have got to know her a little bit and— Um, she’s just a good soul, and this, this organization has, and these fans have really rallied around her and have supported her. And, you know, more than anything, like, I hope she comes back here, and the arena is chanting MVP for her again, like, because that’s what she deserves. She’s been with this organization, what, nine years?

“It would be, if I’m not mistaken, 10 if she was— if we got— we’re able to sign her back. So, um, you know, that’s, that’s certainly our goal. That’s our number one priority. And for myself, my number one priority, like, I hope you know, for the rest of my career, I get to play alongside her. That’s how easy she makes my job. So, you know, that’s kind of what I’m looking forward to through the offseason with her.”
