Prospect Watch: Unbeaten Hussain Al Kurdi faces PFL Africa test

· Yahoo Sports

Hussain Al Kurdi will try to reach the final of the Professional Fighters League Africa lightweight tournament.

Why Demba Seck poses a challenge for unbeaten Hussain Al Kur

The upcoming PFL Africa 3: 2026 Playoffs event will feature the semifinals of this year’s 155-pound tournament, with Al Kurdi facing Demba Seck. Known as “Black Panther,” Al Kurdi has won all three of his professional bouts, recording a third-round knockout and two rear-naked choke finishes.

Like Hazem Kayyali, the subject of last week’s Prospect Watch, Al Kurdi has substantial amateur experience in the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation. He won bronze at the 2022 IMMAF World Championships, held in February 2023, and gold at the 2023 IMMAF Asian Championships. Most of his recorded amateur victories came by stoppage.

Although amateur success does not guarantee professional results, Al Kurdi gained considerable cage experience before his debut. He faced Seif Shawky at Brave Combat Federation 91. “Black Panther” showed promise but also room for improvement. After taking Shawky’s back and threatening a rear-naked choke without securing the finish, Al Kurdi pressed his opponent against the cage and landed three consecutive knees. The third ended the fight at 2:25 of the third round.

Al Kurdi trains with KHK MMA and showcased his Brazilian jiu-jitsu skills in his second outing, against Nour Jopa at Brave CF 100. Shortly after the one-minute mark, Al Kurdi sank a deep rear-naked choke. Jopa resisted but lost consciousness without tapping, giving Al Kurdi a technical submission victory at 1:11 of the opening round.

In his most recent appearance, Al Kurdi weathered a difficult opening round against Abderrahman Errachidy at PFL Africa 2: 2026 First Round in June, taking perhaps the most damage of his career. The more experienced Errachidy landed hard strikes, including two spinning kicks before the horn. Al Kurdi regrouped in the second frame and secured a rear-naked choke that ended the bout at 1:23.

Fellow submission specialist Seck could be Al Kurdi’s toughest test yet. UFC featherweight Kurtis Campbell is the only fighter to have stopped “Black Tiger,” doing so in their Dana White’s Contender Series bout in September 2025. Al Kurdi has the tools to reach the tournament final, but his overall game needs further development. He still has time to improve.
