With the game tied 27-27 in the closing seconds of overtime, the Commanders had the ball at the Giants’ 26-yard line with 55 seconds left. Somehow, they didn’t even manage to attempt a field goal, resulting in a 27-27 tie to end the game.
Horrific Clock Management
After forcing a fumble on the other side of the field, the Commanders drove deep into New York territory to set up what should have been a game-winning field goal. However, Washington allowed the clock to run without even attempting one.
The Commanders had the ball at the Giants’ 26 with 55 seconds left in overtime, on a stopped clock. The Commanders ran the ball, gaining two yards. For some reason, the Commanders allowed the clock to run all the way down to 12 seconds on the game clock before snapping the ball again.
On the play, quarterback Jayden Daniels dropped back to pass before eventually running the ball, losing a yard on the play. At the end of the play, eight seconds remained on the game clock, and the players did not have enough urgency. As a result, the clock ran all the way down, and Washington was unable to spike the ball.
The game ended in a 27-27 tie.
‘In total disbelief’
NBA legend Magic Johnson has been a part owner of the Commanders franchise for just over three years. Needless to say, he was not pleased with the way Sunday’s game ended.
In a post on social media on Sunday afternoon, he said he was “in disbelief” at the “poor clock management.”
“I’m in total disbelief my Commanders had such poor clock management in today’s overtime game against the Giants,” Magic Johnson wrote in a post on X on Sunday. “All we had to do was kick the field goal and we would have won the game!”
The NBA legend added a facepalm emoji to his post, underscoring his frustration with the late-game clock management from the team and head coach Dan Quinn.
It was a horrific blunder from an experienced head coach. And team ownership has certainly taken notice.
