Denver beat the Seattle Seahawks 17-14 in overtime on Thursday Night Football after Ja’Quan McMillian intercepted Sam Darnold and Wil Lutz kicked a 53-yard field goal, while Nix finished 17-of-27 with no touchdowns and no interceptions.
Considering how stop-start the offense was on the night, and the criticism Nix was already facing coming into Week 6, it didn’t take all that long for Broncos fans to start whispering about a potential QB replacement in the 2027 NFL Draft.
Fans Throw CJ Carr’s Name In The Mix As Bo Nix’s Potential Replacement After TNF
CJ Vogel, a recruiting analyst who covers Texas football for On Texas Football, was among the first to float Carr’s name as the Broncos’ next face of the franchise in light of Nix’s ugly performance against the Seahawks.
“CJ Carr would have the Broncos as a Super Bowl favorite in 2027,” Vogel wrote late Thursday night.
Minutes later, one fan skipped the forecast and went straight to the ask. “Draft CJ Carr,” the fan wrote, tagging the Broncos in his post.
Another Broncos fan attached a condition. “Dare I say, if CJ Carr falls to the 2nd round… I might want him to be a Bronco.”
Carr, a Notre Dame junior, is coming off a 14-of-20, 181-yard, three-touchdown day in a 58-7 win over Stanford on Oct. 10 that moved the Fighting Irish to 6-0. Pro Football Network’s CFB QB Impact Grade has Carr at 91.7 this season, third of 170 qualified FBS quarterbacks.

The Carr idea didn’t start Thursday, either. On Oct. 11, the day the Broncos won 23-17 at the Los Angeles Chargers, one fan tagged the team’s account with “Tank for idk, CJ Carr?” Denver won that game, too, though Nix and the offense did little to allay fears about the direction of the team.
Pro Football Network’s Jacob Infante has Carr landing with the Pittsburgh Steelers with the #13 overall pick in his latest 2027 NFL Mock Draft.
“He showed he can make full-field reads, identify the checkdown option, and execute hi-lo concepts efficiently. He throws with a natural sense of touch down the field, and even if his arm isn’t out of this world, he’s capable of delivering throws off platform with nice elasticity,” was Infante’s assessment of the Notre Dame QB.
Bo Nix-Led Broncos Offense Stalled After Halftime
Those posts came late on a night when Denver’s offense went quiet after halftime.
Nix steered two second-quarter touchdown drives, with J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey finishing them on short runs for a 14-3 lead, but the Broncos did not score again until overtime and finished with 168 total yards while converting 3 of 14 third downs.
In Sunday’s win over the Los Angeles Chargers, Nix went 16-of-27 for 123 yards and a touchdown. Through Week 5, Nix’s 59.9% completion rate and 80.8 passer rating each ranked 26th of 31 qualified quarterbacks, and Next Gen Stats had his average of 6 intended air yards per throw as the shallowest of 31 qualified quarterbacks.
Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe also unleashed a rant against Nix, outlining that the franchise will not be leaning towards paying him $55M-$60M if his agent starts negotiations based on his body of work this season.
“He ain’t gonna get it from us,” Sharpe said on the “Nightcap” podcast.

PFN’s NFL QB Impact Grade had Nix at 68.4 through Week 5, 28th of 34 graded quarterbacks. He finished Week 6 with a 65.7 grade.
After the game, one fan aimed wider than the quarterback. “Offense deserves every bit of shame tonight. Regardless of how this turns out,” the fan wrote, before going after the offensive line, Nix, and head coach Sean Payton’s game-calling.
Denver’s defense did its part without cornerback Patrick Surtain II and safety Talanoa Hufanga, both out with ankle injuries, sacking Darnold five times, hitting him 17 times, and forcing three turnovers.
Nix now gets 10 days before his next chance to prove his doubters wrong on Oct. 25 at the Arizona Cardinals, while Carr and Notre Dame visit BYU on Saturday.
