Dillon Brothers Suffer Back-to-Back Setbacks During NASCAR Phoenix Race

· Yahoo Sports

Austin and Ty Dillon probably won’t remember Sunday’s trip to Phoenix Raceway particularly fondly.

The brothers found themselves dealing with separate tire failures just moments apart during the Freeway Insurance 500, turning an otherwise routine stretch of racing into a frustrating afternoon for the Richard Childress family.

Austin’s trouble came first. Running 15th after an extended green-flag stretch, the Richard Childress Racing driver suffered a right-rear tire failure that sent his No. 3 Chevrolet into the outside wall in Turn 4.

The crash brought out the caution and left Austin with significant damage to his car.

Unfortunately for the Dillon family, that wasn’t the end of the trouble.

Ty Dillon Encounters Trouble While Passing Brother’s Crash

As the field slowed under caution and passed the site of Austin’s accident, Ty Dillon developed a flat right-front tire on his No. 10 Chevrolet.

The timing was almost hard to believe.

Austin had just crashed because of a tire failure, and now his younger brother was dealing with another flat before the race had even returned to green.

Unlike Austin, Ty didn’t hit the wall during the sequence. But the unexpected tire problem presented another headache at a point when drivers and teams were preparing for the restart.

There was no immediate indication that the brothers’ tire failures were connected.

A Frustrating Turn for the Dillon Brothers at Phoenix

Austin’s accident was particularly costly given his position on the track. He had worked his way into 15th before the right-rear tire let go, putting an abrupt end to what had been a respectable run.

Ty’s situation was different. His tire went flat under caution rather than at racing speed, sparing him the kind of impact his older brother had just experienced.

Still, the sequence made for one of Sunday’s stranger moments at Phoenix.

Two members of the same racing family, competing in different Chevrolets, suffered tire problems within minutes of each other. And for Ty, the trouble arrived at the very spot where Austin’s afternoon had just unraveled.
