Atlanta's 47-point victory marked the largest winning margin in franchise history, surpassing its previous record of 46 points against Sacramento in 2017. More importantly, the Hawks demonstrated how dangerous they can become when their defense matches their offensive firepower.
Jalen Johnson led Atlanta with 19 points, seven rebounds and eight assists, while Aaron Wiggins provided an impressive spark off the bench with 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting.
The Hawks established control early behind CJ McCollum, who scored 11 first-quarter points. Atlanta's defensive pressure disrupted Charlotte's offensive rhythm, creating turnovers and transition opportunities.
Atlanta carried a commanding 68-43 advantage into halftime, leaving the Hornets searching for answers.
Dyson Daniels continued making his presence felt defensively, recording four steals in the third quarter. His relentless pressure helped Atlanta limit Charlotte to just 19 points during the period.
The Hawks entered the fourth quarter leading 97-62, allowing their reserves to finish the contest while the starters received valuable rest.
Nickeil Alexander-Walker contributed 14 points, while Daniels finished with 11 points and nine rebounds.
Charlotte struggled offensively throughout the night, shooting just 34% from the field. Naz Reid led the Hornets with 17 points, while Brandon Miller managed only six points.
Atlanta forced 27 turnovers and converted those mistakes into 25 points, highlighting its defensive dominance.
The performance represented a significant improvement defensively after Atlanta surrendered 125 points in Wednesday's season-opening victory over Orlando.
For the Hawks, the early results suggest this team has the offensive balance, defensive intensity and bench production necessary to compete in the Eastern Conference.
Atlanta will look to maintain its undefeated start Saturday night when it hosts the Houston Rockets in its home opener.
The challenge now is sustaining that intensity against tougher competition as the season progresses.
