The best coaches don’t wait for the crowd. They get in the hunt.

Jay Bateman got in the hunt early

Kentucky football's defensive coordinator went into the heart of Ole Miss and Mississippi State territory this summer, looking at the film and then at the player. What he found in Brooklyn, Miss., was a 6-foot-1, 200-pound linebacker who plays like he’s late for a collision. Trevaughn Robinson of Forrest County Agricultural had no offers. Bateman made him the first one.

Now Robinson has seen what that offer looks like from the other side of the sideline.

The 2028 three-star, ranked No. 66 among linebackers in the class by the Rivals industry rankings, made his gameday visit to Kroger Field for Kentucky’s 34-17 win over Vanderbilt. He got what a recruit hopes to see on a visit. The Wildcats’ defense made a Saturday afternoon look easy for the home crowd.

The run-stopping defense, they only allowed 15 rushing yards throughout the whole game, which is impressive.

A linebacker would notice that number first, and that’s the point of the visit. Robinson is a run-stopper by trade, and he saw a defense that shut the ground game down for four quarters in a scheme that would ask him to do the same.

His own résumé reads the same way. Through six games this season, Robinson has piled up 94 total tackles, an average of 15.6 per game. He has 11 tackles for loss, two sacks, and three pass breakups. That’s a linebacker who finds the football, gets to it, and gets it on the ground, whether the play goes inside, outside, or into the secondary.

Robinson was candid about what brought him to Lexington.

I was just getting a closer look at Kentucky and seeing how a game day is in BBN.

He picked a good one. Kroger Field on a day Kentucky wins is the best sales pitch a program has, and the Wildcats are 7-1 and climbing the polls.

The Kentucky staff is no longer alone in noticing. Robinson’s numbers have turned heads, and several Power Four programs are now trying to get into the hunt for a player Bateman identified before the rest of them started looking. That’s how this usually goes. One coach does the legwork, and everybody else follows once the tape starts circulating.

For Kentucky, being first still counts. Bateman found him early, sold him on the vision, and then put him in the stands to see it work. The Wildcats now have a head start with a Mississippi linebacker who just watched their defense hold an SEC opponent to 15 rushing yards.

Robinson’s recruitment is wide open, and the 2028 class has a way to go. But a coordinator who was willing to go find him is a hard thing to compete with.
