If there was any doubt about what this Utah team was before going on the road to Cincinnati, those doubts can be laid to rest after a 49-25 dismantling of the Bearcats Saturday.

After a big win against a potent Houston team last week, many thought the Utes could be in for a difficult game against a Cincinnati team that beat previously top-10 ranked Texas Tech a week earlier.

But after scoring on the first drive of the game Saturday, Utah kept its foot on the pedal by keeping the Bearcats out of the end zone for the entire first half and putting up four offensive touchdowns and two defensive touchdowns.

Down 42-6 at halftime, Cincinnati was not able to generate enough offense to get back into the game as Utah coasted to victory.

Trap game? What’s that?

Coming off the team’s biggest win of the season against then-No. 14 Houston, all the talk was about Utah avoiding a letdown on a road trip where Cincinnati waited.

Well, mission accomplished.

In the first half, Ute running back Daniel Bray had a receiving and a rushing touchdown to lead the way offensively, Rabbit Evans recovered a fumble and took it to the house and in the final minute of the first half, Elijah Davis picked off JC French IV and took it to the end zone to put his team at a score of 42.

Whatever Utah coach Morgan Scalley did to help his team avoid a letdown on the road against a capable opponent was clearly effective, because there seemed to be no doubt about which team would emerge the victor.

Have yourself a night, defense

In addition to the scores, Utah played very well defensively. The Bearcats managed to get themselves in scoring position twice in the first half but came away without a touchdown both times as the Ute defense held strong in the red zone to force field goals, and Cincinnati missed field goal on another occasion.

It was a dominant showing by the defense in the first half that all but sealed the victory for Utah. Much of Cincinnati’s offensive production came in the second half, but 25 points was not near enough to complete any comeback attempt as the Utes were able to coast to the finish line.

Don’t doubt Utah’s offense

After some offensive struggles against Houston in which Utah didn’t score a single point in the first half, the Utes wasted no time on the road against the Bearcats.

Jumping out to an early lead, Utah pressed the gas and never looked back as Devon Dampier threw for 260 yards and three touchdowns.

In the run game, Wayshawn Parker and Daniel Bray ran for 82 and 75 yards, including a touchdown each.

After a week in which some might have doubted the Utes’ ability to move the ball effectively, they quieted the noise with an offensive approach that included less trickery than a usual showing for Kevin McGiven’s offense at Utah thus far.

Also getting in on the action was Hunter Andrews, who caught five passes, including two for touchdowns. He finished with 112 yards receiving on the day.

The win for the Utes sets up what will be a huge matchup with BYU next week.
