Media personality Dave Portnoy claims Angel Reese lost the WNBA Finals for the Atlanta Dream, pointing to her poor shooting statistics and low scoring.
Reese began the WNBA Finals well. She scored 18.3 points per game over the first four.
But at crunch time, in Games 5, 6, and 7, Reese’s output dipped to 10.0 PPG. This ended with only 8 points in the deciding game, won 68-63 by the Golden State Valkyries.
Portnoy told Barstool Sports that he does not regard Reese as a top superstar, and blames her for the Atlanta Dream failing to win the title.
He said: “In their last three losses, she scored 23 points, seven of 27 from the field. That’s 25 percent. Eight to 13 from the free throw line. You can sculpt this any way you want. In the last three losses that they had, she didn’t show up at all. Not even a little bit. Not even a tiny bit.
“She made the finals. Congrats! But she lost them the Finals. There’s absolutely no other way to extrapolate this.
“And good season, but before we start putting her in Caitlin Clark’s category to have three games held under 10 and just be a turnover machine, terrible at the line, there’s no other way to look at it. A total disaster class from Angel Reese.”
Angel Reese is taking a break
Angel Reese said the Atlanta Dream had been ‘delayed and not denied’, as she reacted to the team falling narrowly short in Game 7.
And while her performances are dissected, she plans to take a break during the offseason.
Posting on Instagram, she said she feels ‘numb’ after the loss but thanks the Atlanta Dream fans and community for their support.
She added: “Atlanta, you’ve meant the world to me in just 7 months. I pray I get to experience this kind of joy forever. ♥️
“Back to work! See y’all in 6 months.”
