After falling to UCLA in the season opener, Tommy Lloyd and the No. 5 Arizona Wildcats got their first win of the season with a 104-84 beatdown of Cal Poly at home. Motiejus Krivas, who returned to Arizona amid NBA buzz, led the Wildcats with 30 points and eight rebounds.
During his post-game interview with Andy Katz, Lloyd shared what he was most satisfied with in win No. 1.
“Getting the win’s nice. We’re obviously a team that’s figuring itself out. Cal Poly, give them a ton of credit. They played so hard and just kept coming. We had some really good moments. Hopefully we could build on it. We had some moments when we kind of let up a little bit. You can’t let up at this level. Our team has to establish the effort we need to play with all the time. So it’s a little bit of a work in progress,” Lloyd said.

And when asked what he wanted to build on, the reigning Naismith Coach of the Year winner got on his team for failing to rebound and being “allergic” to loose balls.
While Lloyd wasn’t pleased with the team’s rebounding, the Wildcats still had a 44-30 edge on the boards. The Euro frontcourt of Krivas and Ivan Kharchenkov led the way with 18 rebounds combined, while backup big man Evan Otten added seven boards in just nine minutes.
One area that Arizona will need to get better at is 3-point shooting. They went just 4-of-14 from beyond the arc after going a mere 7-of-30 in the loss against UCLA. Lloyd and the Wildcats will look to improve on that and their ability to get to loose balls in their next game against Northern Arizona on Tuesday.
