The Boston Red Sox have quite a bit of work to do in the offseason. Most of the Red Sox issues had to do with a lack of hitting, particularly in the final month of the regular season and in the playoffs.

Sonny Gray didn’t have great things to say about the Red Sox organization at the end of the season. WEEI Red Sox Insider Rob Bradford weighs in on whether he may be back with the team next year.@KenLairdWEEI@teddyjradio@heyrichheypic.twitter.com/wnvVdjz7cD

However, they may need to bring in starting pitching if they can’t re-sign ace pitcher Sonny Gray. After Garrett Crochet went down with an injury that kept him out from April until he was able to pitch in relief in the playoffs, Gray simply took over as the team’s best starting pitcher.
He had an 18-5 record along with a 2.72 earned run average. Gray made 29 starts for the Red Sox and he pitched 169.0 innings. Unlike most of the top pitchers in the game, Gray is not a fireballer who depends on a 100-MPH fastball to blow hitters away. Instead, he is an old-school pitcher who induces weak contact and lets his fielders do the job. He regularly lives on the corners or forces hitters to swing at pitches out of the strike zone.
Gray is a free agent and he will have the opportunity to get offers from teams that value his services. Red Sox insider Rob Bradford believes the Red Sox want Gray back, but it may be at their price.
If Gray wants more, the Red Sox may be willing to let him move on.
That would seem to be a foolish move. It appears that Gray, Payton Tolle and Ranger Suarez clearly fill important roles for the Red Sox starting staff and the belief is that Crochet will come back healthy next year. That would give the Red Sox four solid starters.
However, if Gray leaves, they would need a new starter and perhaps one who can take over as an ace.
