In the preseason, forward Rolyns Aligbe missed one game and freshman guard Kalek House missed two. Fellow freshman Asher Elson missed the entire three-game exhibition slate and the first two regular season games after suffering a slight foot fracture.
Now, backup guard Braden Appelhans is expected to miss time with an injury.
Appelhans suffered the injury while making a back cut during shootaround before Xavier's opener against Mount St. Mary's, Pitino told reporters. He sat in street clothes at the end of the Xavier bench and was seen using crutches to make his way to the locker room. In Xavier's win over Eastern Michigan Nov. 6, Appelhans was wearing a boot.
"I think he'll be out a couple of weeks," Xavier head coach Richard Pitino said. "It's not as serious as we thought, but he'll be out for a little bit."
Appelhans was part of Xavier's backcourt depth, committing to the Musketeers in May and reuniting with Pitino with one year of eligibility remaining.
A 6-foot-6 guard, Appelhans appeared 57 games over three seasons with Pitino's New Mexico Lobos from 2022-2025. His freshman season was cut short due to a thumb injury and he applied for a medical redshirt. Appelhans appeared in 31 games for New Mexico in 2025, helping lead the Lobos to the NCAA Tournament.
Across three exhibition games, Appelhans played six minutes and had five points and one assist. He made his only field goal attempt, a 3-pointer in Xavier's 76-70 win over Kent State Oct. 23.
Elson has yet to make his Xavier debut. The four-star forward could return to the floor as soon as Tuesday, Nov. 10, when Xavier hosts Detroit Mercy, according to Pitino.
"I'm not positive on Tuesday, but he's getting close to being good to go," he said.
