The Golden State Warriors have the opportunity to break the internet this offseason with a reunion trade that would be shocking for fans to wrap their heads around.
Specifically, USA Today’s Marcus D. Smith believes that the Dubs could acquire a two-time NBA champion star who won two championships with the Warriors during the midway point of his career.
“Whenever there's a potential rumor that (Kevin) Durant and his current team are disgruntled with one another, everyone wants to send Durant back to the Bay Area," Smith wrote last Friday.
“Even though, when he made the move a decade ago, it was frowned upon, seemingly causing a talent imbalance in the league. Reports say that Durant and (Houston) Rockets coach Ime Udoka are essential pieces to the Rockets' future, but a reunion between the Warriors and the two-time Finals MVP would be almost like a storybook ending.”
After a stress and drama-filled tenure with the Phoenix Suns, Durant joined the up-and-coming Rockets this past offseason via a historic seven-team trade. It was business as usual for Durant in Houston, as the 37-year-old averaged 26.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game while shooting 52.0% from the field and 41.3% from long range in 78 contests.
The Rockets did get eliminated by the Los Angeles Lakers to open the postseason, though, which wasn't an ideal finish for a Houston squad hoping to make significant noise in Durant’s first season with the club.
Still, there hasn’t been a clear indication that the Rockets are open to trading Durant to the Warriors or any other franchise interested in landing him in the summer. For the Warriors, it also doesn’t help that Durant shut down the idea of a reunion with Golden State before this year’s Feb. 5 trade deadline.
Does that mean a deal won’t occur? Not necessarily, but a miracle would probably have to arise for the Dubs to bring back the fan-favorite forward.
