They'll be quite a bit depleted for as long as superstar defenseman Cale Makar isn't playing.

He won't be part of Game 1 against the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday night, and it's not yet determined how long he'll be out.

All that's known for sure is he's missing in action on Wednesday. Jack Ahcan will dress with Makar out.

Why isn't Cale Makar playing tonight?

Makar was ruled out earlier Wednesday due to injury.

At the moment, Colorado has termed Makar to be "day-to-day."

As usual, the details here are being kept pretty well under wraps. That's how it works in the hockey world.

The suggestion of a day-to-day verdict is that Makar could be back any time in this series. But given that he's not playing Game 1, it's certainly something to have some worry about for Avs fans.

So far in this postseason, Makar had four goals and an assist through nine games.

He played 29 shifts in the Avalanche's comeback win over the Wild in the previous round to win that series.

But at some point, he got hurt, and now Makar is out.
