Stellenbosch FC striker Ashley Cupido is facing an uncertain future at the Cape Winelands after a below par 2025/26 campaign, Foot Africa has established.
The 25-year-old centre-forward signed for Stellies in a player-plus-cash swap deal from Cape Town Spurs in August 2024, with Mervin Boji going the other way.
Cupido helped Stellenbosch to qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup in his debut season, as he netted five goals and laid three assists in 24 league outings.
Now, with one goal and two assists in 38 matches across all competitions in the just-ended campaign, the player's future is hanging in the balance.
Stellies are understood to be in the market for a striker as they usher into a new era under the tutelage of four-time league winner Gavin Hunt, who signed a two-year deal.
The club has earmarked Tshegofatso Mabasa for the no.9 role, with the player reportedly set to become a free agent as Orando Pirates opted against renewing his contract.
Mabasa recently parted ways with Stellenbosch upon the expiry of his loan deal from Pirates. He scored four goals in 14 matches during his spell at the Cape club.
On the other hand, sources have told this publication that Tanzanian giants Simba SC have revived their interest in Cupido, while Betway Premiership clubs are also informed.
It is believed that Stellies would be open to cash in on the forward at the right price, with Steve Barker said to be keen on a reunion in East Africa to bolster the frontline.
Cupido, however, still has a long-term contract at the Winelands, meaning any potential suitors will have to fork out a large chunk of money to prize him away.
