Cleveland's required Super Bowl updates put to the test in Nashville

One of the largest attractions for owners and cities to embark on building a brand new stadium is the prospect that one day, they will get the opportunity to host a Super Bowl.

That idea is certainly in the mind of the Cleveland Browns ownership as they broke ground on the new Huntington Bank Field several weeks ago. The Browns are upgrading their stadium to become a state-of-the-art facility that will be one of the best locations in the entire league.

Cleveland needed the stadium facelift in a bad way, but one of the byproducts of it is the opportunity to host the big game in the future. The stadium won't be complete until 2029, and that gives people in Cleveland the opportunity to get everything together.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was in town for the groundbreaking ceremony, and he commented that the city of Cleveland isn't quite there to host a Super Bowl. There are simply not enough beds to host the event. Browns majority owner, Jimmy Haslman, commented into the mic that other people in Cleveland have to become so much less risk-averse. He was quoted as saying that there are only two people in the city who are actually investing, and they both own teams (Dan Gilbert, Cleveland Cavaliers).

Haslam cannot do it all from an investment perspective; there will need to be others who throw their hat in the ring to contribute to the city.

The city of Nashville is going to lay out a heck of a blueprint on how to accomplish this. On Tuesday, it was announced that Music City is going to host the 2030 Super Bowl and is having to increase the number of beds within reach of the stadium from 62,000 to 80,000.

It can be done, but not without investment. Cleveland's numbers are way off from that. According to the Cleveland Sports Commission, there are 15,000-20,000 hotel rooms located within a one-hour driving radius of the city of Cleveland.

The main difference from Nashville to Cleveland is that those hotel rooms will be put to use even after the Super Bowl rolls through town. Nashville is a magnet city where Cleveland is not. People need a reason to come to Cleveland, so making the investment in that many hotel rooms is a major, major risk.

It will take a ton of investment if this is something that the state and city want to accomplish. Time will tell if someone will pony up to put the money down to accomplish this. If not, there will be no Super Bowl in Cleveland, even in the incredible new stadium.
