Former UNC commit returns to college football after MLB stint

Thanks to NIL money, the transfer portal and changing eligibility requirements, today's college sports world is becoming increasingly bizarre.

Last season, Charles Bediako returned to Alabama after a multi-year stint in the NBA G-League. That didn't last long, with Bediako now playing in Canada.

Now, a former UNC football commit is making an unusual return to college sports. Jordyn Adams, who played three MLB season between the Los Angeles Angels and Baltimore Orioles, recently enrolled to play football at SMU.

Adams initially committed to North Carolina for both baseball and football, but after a nearly 9-year stint in minor league baseball, is returning to college sports at 26 years old. The Tar Heels won't face their former commit this fall, but keep an eye out for future matchups between UNC and SMU.

Adams struggled in living up to his MLB Draft selection, mashing just .165 with 13 hits, six runs, five RBI and one home run across 38 MLB games. The minor leagues proved much kinder to Adams, with a career slash line of .245, 612 hits, 386 runs, 55 home runs and 304 RBI, but he is now taking an unconventional career route.

With a move like Adams', how many additional athletes will we see return to college? Michael Jordan made the brief switch from basketball to baseball, but did so after turning professional.

This could be the right move for Adams' career. He could thrive in four years at SMU, then later become a 30-year-old NFL rookie.

Whatever the reasoning behind Adams' interesting decision, here's to hoping it works out. If you have college eligibiliy left, why not use it?
