Iowa football fans react to Brendan Sorsby eligibility ruling

The Brendan Sorsby saga took another turn on Monday.
Visit zeppelin.cool for more information.
Sorsby, Texas Tech's transfer quarterback, has been under fire since admitting he's placed over 9,000 sports bets over the past four years. Those bets included Hoosier football games while he was on the Indiana roster. After transferring to the Red Raiders from Cincinnati this offseason, he was ruled ineligible by the NCAA for gambling.
It's been a messy, back-and-forth affair as Sorsby's fought for his eligibility. And on Monday, news broke that shook the college football world.
Sorsby received an injunction from a judge in Lubbock, Texas (where Texas Tech's campus is located) that grants him eligibility for the 2026 season. As of now, he'll be able to suit up for all of next season's games after serving a two-game suspension.
That news riled up a lot of fans, including the Iowa faithful. The Hawkeyes dealt with a gambling situation a few years ago. Defensive lineman Noah Shannon admitted to placing one bet on the Iowa women's basketball team during their 2023 NCAA Tournament run. The NCAA ruled him ineligible for his senior season. He missed out on one more season with his teammates and a potential NFL career for placing bets on a team he had no affiliation with.
Contrasting that with the Sorsby situation had a lot of Iowa fans heated on social media. Here are some of the best reactions.
Iowa fans react to Brendan Sorsby's eligibility ruling
Noah Shannon didn’t bet on his own team’s games and was villainized while being suspended his entire final season of eligibility. Shannon likely would have gotten a ton more experience, knowledge and film for a potential NFL career. This Sorsby situation sucks for the sport.

As the Brendan Sorsby news settles, here's your reminder that Iowa saw the NCAA suspend starting DT Noah Shannon for a full year for a bet on an entirely different sport.

The precedent was already set. Makes no sense to bend the rules for this case. https://t.co/q5n3COHXhS
Noah Shannon:
— HAWK_GUYS (@HAWK_GUYS) June 8, 2026
-Placed 1 bet for $10 on a women’s basketball game.
-Turned himself in.
-NCAA banned him for the season and ended his career
Brendan Sorsby:
-Over 2,000 bets placed.
-$90,000 in bets.
-Found eligible to play.

Imagine being one of the Cyclones or Hawkeyes with far less egregious wagering who were never able to play NCAA football again. https://t.co/lIpfCzGoJe

You don’t get to play the morality card after what you did to Noah Shannon. https://t.co/MboWW9PowC

So let me get this straight.
— Brad Schultz (@BradMSchultz) June 8, 2026
Brendan Sorsby bet on his own team and openly admitted to having a gambling addiction. He gets to play college football.
Noah Shannon didn't bet on his own team but still lost his entire senior season and a chance at the NFL.
Ridiculous. https://t.co/8IjuxyolZ1
I’d be so pissed if I were Noah Shannon. So little makes sense these days. https://t.co/A6h4DSE3aa
— Pat Harty (@PatHarty) June 8, 2026
This is obscene. Noah Shannon was banished from his final season at Iowa and undrafted because of a $20 bet on the Iowa Womens' Basketball team in their NCAA championship game. What a cesspool. https://t.co/YQRhnqstvu

I will be perfectly fine if some of the NIL money goes to Noah Shannon’s lawsuit fund against the NCAA
— Hawkeye Insano (@HawkeyeInsano) June 8, 2026
So Noah Shannon loses his final year of eligibility (which ruin his chances of going to the NFL) for a few bets on the women’s basketball team, but Brendan Sorsby bets 90 THOUSAND DOLLARS on his own teams and misses two games? Got it 👍🏻 https://t.co/1ugYT4SeRj

I don’t know if it’s the NCAA, a judge or his lawyer, but Noah Shannon should get to pie multiple people in the face. And Kirk should get to follow it up with a slap upside the head.

Kid got hosed.

Noah Shannon, Iowa, and Iowa State are going to own every asset the NCAA has after they get done suing them. I wonder what they're going to do with all of this extra money... #Hawkeyes

Noah Shannon placed a bet on Iowa women’s basketball and was banned https://t.co/wdfz6vUTSw
