Germany captain Joshua Kimmich analyzes Spain’s draw with Cabo Verde

Germany got off to a good start in their World Cup campaign with a 7-1 win over Curaçao, but the same can’t be said for European champions Spain who were held to a goalless draw by a resolute Cabo Verde side. In a recent press conference, Germany captain Joshua Kimmich gave his take on that result, the effect of the expanded tournament, and the visible improvement of lesser teams in the World Cup.

“Generally speaking, it’s getting more difficult to win games,” Kimmich explained (as captured by X account @iMiaSanMia). “The so-called smaller nations are getting better, both from a footballing and tactical point of view. Curaçao actually played football against us, I had expected more long balls.
“I watched Haiti against Scotland, and they also played a good game. It’s no longer straightforward. The bigger nations have to get even better to win these games. It shows that our 7-1 against Curaçao is not a given. You have to work for it.”
Die Mannschaft face two stern tests in the form of Ivory Coast and Ecuador in their group. Should Germany succeed in defeating both those countries, then maybe a deep run isn’t out of the question.
