How good can Colts CB duo be? Charvarius Ward weighs in

With Sauce Gardner and Charvarius Ward leading the way, the Indianapolis Colts could have the top cornerback duo in football this season.

That said, while Ward and Gardner are aware of the potential they have together, they also know that a lot of work has to first take place in order to accomplish that.

"On paper, we can be one of the best in the game," Ward said, via Colts Roundtable. "But honestly, we've got to go out there and put in work and get some good continuity together, 'cause shoot, I think last year, me and Sauce only played one game together, like there's not a lot of time together. So, obviously, he can learn a lot from me. I can learn a lot from him."

Unfortunately, due to injuries, both Gardner and Ward saw limited action last season with the Colts and were rarely on the field together.

But individually, both showcased their lockdown coverage abilities.

In four games, Gardner allowed a completion rate of 54%, giving up just 7.3 yards per catch, with three pass breakups. Ward, meanwhile, allowed a completion rate of 57% on 37 targets with seven pass breakups over seven games.

Having one corner of with those coverage abilities can greatly impact a game. A lockdown presence affords Lou Anarumo more flexibility as he builds out game plans and allows him to call more aggressive games as well.

However, having two high-end corners only enhances those capabilities for Anarumo and can put opposing quarterbacks in a real bind. There are only so many places to go with the ball.

"Just on our side, we feel like we have a huge advantage, obviously, when we have those two guys out on the field," Anarumo said. "So, we're looking forward to it."

Beyond Gardner and Ward, overall, the Colts boast a deep and talented cornerback room. With questions around the Colts' ability to generate a steady pass rush, the play of the secondary can provide the defensive ends with some added time to get home.
