Philadelphia still feels like home to Zach Ertz
When asked what stands out most about his time in Philadelphia, Ertz didn't mention the franchise's first Super Bowl championship. He spoke about Jason Kelce kicking over trash cans because he didn't agree with the way a coach treated a teammate. He laughed while remembering Lane Johnson hiding Kelce's helmet. Those moments, he explained, are what have stayed with him far more than touchdowns, receptions, or wins. It's a perspective that only grows stronger with time.
"It is a little emotional talking about it... No one's going to remember the catches or yards… I remember the day-to-day."
Ertz also acknowledged something Eagles fans have probably suspected for years. Even after spending time with the Arizona Cardinals and Washington Commanders, Philadelphia never truly left him. He admitted he still found himself quietly singing the Eagles' fight song while standing on the opposing sideline during games at Lincoln Financial Field. That's the type of admission that probably doesn't surprise anyone who watched his career unfold.
Ertz spent nine seasons wearing midnight green. He earned three Pro Bowl selections. He helped deliver the franchise's first Lombardi Trophy. Along the way, he established himself as one of the greatest tight ends in Eagles history.
He was traded mid-season in 2021, a deal that eventually led to the selection of Jordan Davis. Still, one thing holds, and it always will.
Some bonds never fade
Eventually, every NFL career comes to an end. Ertz hopes to continue playing after recovering from the ACL injury that prematurely ended his 2025 season, but whenever that day arrives, it's becoming increasingly obvious how he'll be remembered. His appearance on New Heights wasn't filled with bold takes or headline-grabbing revelations. Instead, it felt like an old friend returning home to reminisce with teammates who became family. For Philadelphia's fans, that's exactly how Zach Ertz should be remembered. He wasn't simply a franchise legend or Super Bowl hero. He was more than one of the franchise's greatest tight ends. He was one of the foundational pieces of a locker room that forever changed Eagles football.
The catches, touchdowns, and championship ring made him a franchise legend, but the friendships, loyalty, and love he still carries for the organization are what make him family. He'll return home one day. He'll retire as an Eagle, as he should, but he's hoping he can play a little longer.
