A look back at the 1956 season for the Cardinals
The 1956 season was their last winning season in Chicago. They finished second in the NFL East division, going 7-5.
They started the season winning four straight games, but lost five of their next seven.
They averaged 20.0 points a game, but they had the second-best scoring defense in the league, allowing 15.2 points per game.
1956 individual honors, leaders
The Cardinals had five Pro Bowlers in 1956:
- RB Ollie Matson
- CB Night Train Lane
- CB Lindon Crow
- LB Leo Sanford
- C Jack Simmons
Matson and Lane were first-team All-Pros, and Crow was on the All-Pro second team.
Lamar McHan started 10 of the 12 games at quarterback. He passed 1,159 yards, 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
Matson rushed for 924 yards and five touchdowns, and Johnny Olszewski added 598 rushing yards and two scores.
Don Stonesifer was their leading receiver with 22 catches for 320 yards.
Matson also averaged 27.8 yards per kickoff return and returned one for a touchdown.
