Spain celebrate a second world title, ending Argentina’s bid for back-to-back triumphs. The 2026 tournament will be remembered as a competition where records fell, and the game’s biggest stars shone.

Following the final, we’ve put together our 2026 World Cup Team of the Tournament.
Goalkeeper: Unai Simon – Spain
Repaid Luis de la Fuente’s faith as the head coach stuck with Spain’s number one despite the impressive club campaigns of David Raya and Joan Garcia. Simon conceded only once all tournament, adding the Golden Glove to his winners’ medal.
Right-back: Pedro Porro – Spain
Nailed down a starting place in the knockout rounds after shining against Saudi Arabia in the group stage. Porro was another who vindicated his manager’s trust, scoring goals against Austria and France, while linking up well with Lamine Yamal.
Centre-back: Cristian Romero – Argentina
Few embody the Argentine will-to-win more than Cuti Romero, whose desire often oversteps the mark.
Romero, however, is a terrific defender and was a cornerstone of Argentina’s run to the final. He kickstarted the comeback against Egypt with a goal in the last 16 and was outstanding as England were beaten in the semi-final. His withdrawal in the decider through injury was costly for La Albiceleste.
Centre-back: Pau Cubarsi – Spain
The composure of this kid is something else. Pau Cubarsi flies under the radar somewhat given the presence of Lamine Yamal, but the Spain centre-back is a wonderkid in his own right. One goal conceded all summer earned Cubarsi the Young Player of the Tournament.
Left-back: Marc Cucurella – Spain
Marc Cucurella just loves playing for Spain. Since breaking into the side ahead of Euro 2024, the left-back has been a central figure in La Roja’s success. His energy is infectious, and Real Madrid will welcome that next season.
Midfield: Rodri – Spain
Rodri returned to his peerless best this summer, with the Spain captain earning the Golden Ball. The 30-year-old led the tournament for passes and was the metronome and leader of Spain’s successful side.
Rodri has now been named Player of the Tournament as his sides have won the World Cup, European Championship, Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup. Incredible.
Midfield: Jude Bellingham – England
Dragged England through the knockout stages with some standout performances, netting braces under pressure in big wins over Mexico and Norway.
It’s easy to forget that some questioned whether Bellingham should start the tournament in the England side. He quickly made those critics look foolish. His seven goals made this the most prolific World Cup campaign by an Englishman.
Midfield: Michael Olise – France
Michael Olise set a new World Cup record after registering seven assists this summer, breaking the previous best for a single tournament set by Pele. Olise’s weight of pass and invention is a joy to watch, with some ludicrous link-up with Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele.
Forward: Lionel Messi – Argentina
Messi might have fallen short of successive World Cup wins, but the ageing icon showed he might still be the best player in the world.
Even at 39, Messi dragged Argentina kicking and screaming through the tournament, so often coming to the fore in their hour of need. He scored eight times and assisted four more in his most productive World Cup campaign ever.
Forward: Kylian Mbappe – France
Kylian Mbappe – The World Cup’s record scorer.
Mbappe made history in North America by becoming the first player ever to win multiple Golden Boots, with the Frenchman scoring 10 times to add another leading scorer prize to his 2022 accolade. He’s now scored 22 goals in 22 games at the World Cup, an unthinkable total, and one he still has time to add to.
Forward: Erling Haaland – Norway
Norway’s return to the World Cup after a long absence was inspired by one man, and Erling Haaland ensured the Scandinavians made their mark at the tournament.
Haaland hit seven goals in just five games, averaging a World Cup goal every 66 minutes in his first major tournament. His double to down Brazil will live long in the memory.
