Norris recorded 1 minute 17.939 seconds on the 4.381-kilometre Hungaroring as he beat Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton by .117 of a second and championship leader Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes by .129.

The tiny gaps promise an exciting qualifying session later in the day for Sunday's race.

Ferrari had dominated both sessions on Friday, the first one from Charles Leclerc and the second from Hamilton.

Antonelli sat out the opening session to allow reserve driver Fred Vesti to handle the car and was only 13th quickest in the second one but he returned strong on Saturday in hot conditions.

His Mercedes team-mate George Russell was sixth more than six tenths back and former multiple world champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull followed in saeventh.

The session was red-flagged for a few minutes after Sergio Perez had to park his Cadillac trackside with what appeared to be a brakes problem.

Antonelli won last week in Austria for a sixth season success and tops the championship 45 points ahead of Hamilton. Russell is 50 points behind Antonelli.
