Mets trading Clay Holmes and Tyrone Taylor to Cubs

The Mets are trading Clay Holmes and outfielder Tyrone Taylor to the Chicago Cubs, according to SNY MLB Insider Chelsea Janes.

In exchange, the Mets will receiver infielder Jefferson Rojas, ranked as the Cubs' No. 2 overall prospect.
Holmes was off to a phenomenal start this year, with a 2.39 ERA and 1.10 WHIP over his first nine outings, but he suffered a freak injury on May 15 against the Yankees when a comebacker broke his fibula.
That injury caused a disastrous domino effect for the Mets' rotation, which sagged due to the ineffectiveness (and eventual trade) of David Peterson, the injury and ineffectiveness of Kodai Senga, the early struggles of Sean Manaea, and the inability of Jonah Tong to take the next step.
While Holmes isn't definitely headed for free agency after this season, it will be a relative shock if he doesn't decline the $12 million player option he holds for 2027.
David Stearns and the Mets have already been very active ahead of the 6:00 p.m. deadline, trading away A.J. Minter, Huascar Brazoban, Luke Weaver, Brooks Raley, and Freddy Peralta in recent days.
