During his phenomenal career, Shaq won four NBA Championships and a plethora of individual accolades. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Shaq’s son, Shareef O’Neal.
Despite a three-year NCAA stint, Shareef is yet to make his NBA debut because of life-threatening heart surgery and a series of injuries. But Shaq’s son seems keen on the NBA.

Today, Shaq is an NBA legend and is still connected to the league by serving as an analyst for ESPN. He has also built a business empire, but Shaq’s success cost him dearly.
How? Well, O’Neal explained to his son that he lost a family to become successful as Shareef expressed his desire to play in the league.
“All right, but you know we don’t need basketball. I’ve been around the game since ’89, buddy. I’ve seen it all. You gotta understand that in that life, you know you have to give everything up?” Shaq said on Netflix’s Post Moves.
He added, “… Are you ready to live that life? If you want to be great, my man, you gotta sacrifice everything. I’ve lost a family trying to be great.”
Shaq’s turbulent relationship with his family isn’t new; the LA Lakers legend has always been open about it. Keeping that in mind, he prepared Shareef to be ready for the sacrifices if he still wishes to become an NBA player.
Either way, it’s a long shot that Shareef even gets a chance to play in the NBA, as he’s already 26 years old and hasn’t even made his league debut.
