UPDATE: ‘Investigation completed’ into murder-accused cricketer

On Friday, well-known former club cricketer Tristan Perez – who stands accused of murdering girlfriend Elana Brooke – returned to the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court for another appearance after previously being released on bail.

At the time, the family and representatives of Brooke had expressed their outrage over his release on R5 000 bail, with Perez having been arrested in connection with the tragic death of Brooke in Heathfield, Cape Town, on 23 March.
Before Friday, 7 August, Perez last appeared briefly in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on 2 June, but the case was postponed to allow the State further time to conduct its investigation.
According to Brooke’s ex-husband and family spokesperson, David, that ‘investigation’ is now complete.
“Just a quick update,” he shared. “The accused appeared in Wynberg Magistrates’ Court this morning. The State requested that the matter be transferred to the Wynberg Regional Court, with the next court appearance set for 27 August.
“The outstanding reports requested by the Regional Prosecutor have now been received from SAPS, meaning the investigation has been completed and the matter is progressing through the legal process in the Regional Court.
“This is a positive step forward, and we remain hopeful as we continue to fight for justice for Elana.”
Tristan Perez must answer to murder charges
Back in March, police apprehended Perez after suspecting his involvement in the murder of Brooke after what was believed to be a heated argument.
According to reports, police were granted permission to check Perez’s phone, where they found a recording of an escalating argument, and suspicions that it ended with the tragic killing of Brooke.
She was 46.
Perez reportedly told officers that Brooke had died by suicide.
Well-known former club cricketer now awaits his fate
Perez has been a mainstay in Cape Town’s club cricket scene for several years, but Claremont Cricket Club had already abruptly ended his membership in mid-February due to “disciplinary matters arising from conduct deemed to be inconsistent with the ethos, values and spirit of the club.”
According to the Club Cricket website, just before his arrest, Perez had just recently scored a record-breaking double century for Claremont Cricket Club’s second XI, smashing 237 runs off 113 balls.
