Pearl City advances in baseball championship game

Boston Schwager pitched six shutout innings, allowing four hits and striking out eight, and Graiden Duke went 2-for-2 and drove in three runs as Pearl City trounced Newark, Del., 12-0, in Friday’s United States Championship to advance to face Curacao today for the Senior League Baseball World Series (ages 13-16) title in Easley, S.C.
Pearl City scored two runs in the second, single runs in the third and fourth, two more in the sixth and six runs in the seventh. In all, Pearl City had eight hits, walked 11 times, was hit by pitches six times and did not commit an error while Newark committed four.

Kysen Hueu went 2-for-3, with a double and two RBIs and Justin Raine Kamana‘o-Bulosan batted 2-for-5 with a double. Noah Propios went 0-for-2 but scored a team-high three runs.
Pearl City advanced to the U.S. title game with a 3-2 victory over Macon, Ga., on Thursday. That avenged a 4-1 loss to start the series on Monday. Pearl City then won elimination games against Laredo, Texas, 8-5 on Monday and Easley, S.C., 11-0 on Wednesday.
Pearl City will take on Curacao, which defeated Venezuela 4-1 on Friday in the International Championship game. The Pearl City-Curacao game will be 6 a.m. on ESPN+.
Alumna Drew to lead UH diving program
The University of Hawaii has named alumna QiongJie “Ajie” (Huang) Drew as its men’s and women’s diving coach.
Drew won the NCAA’s 1-meter springboard title at the 2005 national championships and was inducted into the UH Circle of Honor in 2013. She totaled eight NCAA All-America honors in three seasons. Drew was Western Athletic Conference Diver of the Year in 2004 and 2006. She won the WAC 1-meter from 2004 to 2006 and the 3-meter in 2004 and 2005.
With the help of Drew’s two 2006 titles, the team won its first WAC team title.
Before joining UH swimming and diving head coach Steve Allnutt’s staff, Drew was an assistant coach with USA Diving (2008) and the diving coach at Idaho (2008-09) and Punahou (2010-11).
