Hub City drops series finale at Bowling Green 11-2

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (Hub City Spartanburgers) — After four wins in five games from Hub City this week, Bowling Green’s offense unloaded to salvage the series finale on Sunday. The Hot Rods (27-14, 74-33) scored the final nine runs of the game to win 11-2 over the Spartanburgers (15-26, 49-58).

Dominic Niman got Sunday afternoon’s showdown started with a scoreless top of the first, stranding two Spartanburgers. Tony Santa Maria took the second pitch from Enrique Segura (L, 1-4) deep in the bottom of the first. Nathan Flewelling followed with a single, and Noah Myers scored him with a two-out double.
Hub City erased the two-run deficit over the next two innings. Quincy Scott and Antonis Macias smacked singles to start the second, then Scott sprinted home after a Cal Stark flyout and a throwing error. Casey Cook led off the third with a solo homer.
After a one-two-three second inning, Segura returned for the third. He walked Santa Maria and conceded a two-run shot to Flewelling to start the inning. An out later, Ryan McCoy tripled, and Myers singled him in. One batter later, Anthony Susac got the call out of the ‘Burgers bullpen. He cleaned up the inning without further damage.
Niman ended his day with a one-two-three fourth. A fielding error with two outs in the fourth gifted Bowling Green a sixth run. Both teams brought in new relievers for the fifth. Cade Citelli (W, 6-1) and J’Briell Easley each left one runner stranded in scoreless frames.
Jacob Hartlaub kept the ‘Burgers off the board in the sixth and seventh. The Hot Rods tacked on against Easley in the bottom of the sixth. Narciso Polanco doubled with two outs to cash in on a leadoff walk to Juanfel Peguero.
Bowling Green produced a big inning against Luke Savage in the seventh. Myers started the rally with a home run on the first pitch he saw. Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases with two outs. Flewelling doubled off the wall in right field to clear the bases and put Bowling Green on top 11-2. Cole Roland came in for the final out of the seventh and a scoreless eighth. Jackson Lancaster and Kaleb Corbett did not allow a hit to Hub City across the final two innings.
After a 4-2 series win against the best team in the South Atlantic League, the Spartanburgers return to Fifth Third Park for their second to last home series of the regular season. Hub City hosts the Greenville Drive, High-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, for a six-game series beginning on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. ET.
