The Roman Anthony and Trevor Story waiting game might finally be approaching its conclusion. Anthony and Story reportedly have completed their rehab assignments with Triple-A Worcester and are expected to join the Boston Red Sox in New York, according to MLB reporter Francys Romero.

Romero added that either player could be activated Saturday or Sunday during Boston’s four-game series against the Yankees.
That leaves some mystery surrounding the exact timing of their returns. Neither player was with the Red Sox for Friday night’s series opener despite growing speculation that at least Anthony might rejoin the club in the Bronx.
Anthony instead reported to Polar Park on Friday after going 2-for-4 with an RBI double and a single Thursday. He has hit .304 with two home runs during rehab stops with Double-A Portland and Worcester.
Now, it appears his rehab work is complete.
The same reportedly is true for Story, giving Boston a chance to add two important hitters before the weekend concludes.
Red Sox Offense Desperately Needs Reinforcements
The timing could not be better for the Red Sox.
Boston suffered a 1-0 loss to the Yankees on Friday, marking its second consecutive shutout. The Red Sox have gone 18 straight innings without scoring a run and wasted an excellent performance from Patrick Sandoval in the series opener. Boston collected five hits and drew six walks against New York but finished 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position. The Red Sox left 10 runners on base and failed to take advantage of five walks from Yankees starter Cam Schlittler.

Paul Goldschmidt’s third-inning solo home run accounted for the game’s only scoring.
The loss dropped Boston three games behind New York in the American League East and seven games behind the division-leading Tampa Bay Rays. The Red Sox and Yankees will play a doubleheader Saturday, creating a possible opportunity for Anthony or Story to make an immediate impact.

Anthony would add another dangerous left-handed hitter to the lineup. Story would provide a proven bat while restoring Boston’s regular presence at shortstop.
The Red Sox have not officially announced when either player will be activated, so the mystery is not completely over.
The finish line, however, finally appears to be in sight. After consecutive nights without a run, Boston could not ask for the offensive help to arrive at a better time.
