The Premier League is back for the 2026/27 season – and with it comes a number of new rules.

From stricter time limits on substitutions, throw-ins and goal kicks, to changes involving goalkeeper injuries, VAR andeven hair-pulling, players and managers have plenty to get used to this season.
Referees have also been instructed to clamp down on holding, while injured players will face longer waits before being allowed back onto the pitch.

- If a game is stopped for a goalkeeper injury, managers will have to nominate one outfield player to leave the pitch. They must remain off the pitch for at least one minute after the restart.
- A red card will be given if there is 'a clear and deliberate move' to pull someone's hair. A yellow card will be given if the action is deemed to have happened without excessive force.
- There is an increase in the time an injured player must stay off the pitch after receiving treatment. This has been raised from 30 seconds in 2025/26 to 2026/27 for the current campaign.
- Premier League players now have just 10 seconds to leave the pitch after being substituted. A failure to do so will see the substitute have to wait until the next stoppage of play to enter the pitch. The next stoppage must be at least one minute after the initial planned substitution.
- A five-second limit has been placed on the taking of goal kicks and throw-ins. A failure to take the a goal kick in the five-second timeframe will result in a corner kick being awarded to the opposition. A failure to take a throw-in in time will see the opposition handed the throw-in.
- Referees have been asked to place a greater focus on holding. Players will be penalised more often if it is judged their only focus is on holding the opponent and impacting an attacker's ability to play.
