Arsenal leading race to sign Malick Fofana from Lyon

Arsenal FC have jumped to the front of the queue in the race to sign Belgium international winger Malick Fofana (21) from Lyon, according to L’Equipe. OL were expected to part ways with the 21-year-old as they failed to secure UEFA Champions League football for the current season. The financially-troubled Ligue 1 side need to sell before tomorrow’s Deadline Day, and Fofana is their most marketable asset. The Gunners are reportedly in advanced talks with the entourage of Fofana, and Mikel Arteta has already given the green light to the move.

Arsenal are in the market for a left-winger after sanctioning Gabriel Martinelli’s sale to Al-Hilal. Martinelli and Fofana are both represented by the Roc Nation agency. L’Equipe understands that Arsenal, who face Aston Villa tonight in the Premier League, are yet to submit any bid for Lyon, but Les Gones are being optimistic that the Gunners will make concrete moves to sign the 21-year-old. Lyon have set a €40m price tag on Fofana. Sunderland and Hull City were previously interested in a move for Malick Fofana.

Having joined from La Gantoise in January 2024, the Aalst-born player quickly established himself as a key member of the Rhône-based side’s squad. Having been sidelined for almost the entirety of last season, Fofana has made a flying start to the 2026-27 campaign, scoring two goals in six appearances across all competitions.
