Kyle Whittingham refutes Utah injury pressure allegations

Last week, the Salt Lake Tribune had a salacious story that indicated there were big problems at Utah under new Michigan football head coach Kyle Whittingham. The story featured six former Utes who claimed that the coaching staff had pressured them to play through injuries.
On Tuesday, Whittingham pushed back publicly on those comments.

Appearing on the Dan Patrick Show, Whittingham said that he always deferred to the medical staff in Salt Lake City when it came to injuries and he fully refuted the report from his former hometown paper.
"Never in my career have I ever tried to sway, influence, whatever the word is, our medical staff, you know, wherever I've been," Whittingham said. "We listen to the medical staff. If they say players available, we go with that. And if they say he's not available, we go with that.
"And so I'm not sure where this came from or what the -- just how it ever materialized. But never in my career have we ever crossed the line of trying to override a medical decision by our medical staff."
Michigan's medical staff is rather rigorous when it comes to injuries. Both Jim Harbaugh and Sherrone Moore regularly deferred to players' availability to whatever the medical experts on staff had decided.
