Why Warriors Need to Get Steph Curry’s Contract Extension Done

Steph Curry is officially extension eligible and now the clock is ticking for the Golden State Warriors to lock Curry down on an extension that could potentially extend through the end of Curry's career, removing at least one aspect of doubt from Golden State's near future. 

A disappointing 2025-26 season and a quiet offseason has left the Warriors in somewhat of a state of turmoil and without making any realty steps forward ahead of next season, the top priority for Golden State has to be securing Curry, who remains the most productive player on the roster at 38-years-old.

Whatever Curry does in regard to his contract extension will speak volumes about the direction of the franchise.

As disappointing as the past season and offseason has been for Warriors fans, the franchise has made it clear that the voices inside of the locker room and front office speak louder than the voices outside of it, with Curry's being the loudest voice of all. 

As a recent story from The Athletic by Nick Friedell put it, Curry signing an extension before the season begins would speak volumes about the franchise star's trust in the Warriors' leadership, namely general manager Mike Dunleavy and owner Joe Lacob.

If Curry were to delay talks of his extension past the start of the season, which is the last season on his contract before he enters free agency, then there will be far more doubt about his feelings with the franchise.

Curry could be waiting for the season to unfold to both see how the team as it stands can perform, and of the front office is equipped to make moves than can benefit Curry and team team quickly through the final years of Curry's career.

While it would inconceivable for Curry to leave the Warriors, the team that he has represented for nearly two decades and the team that he transformed into a four championship dynasty, it isn't impossible. 

A superstar of his caliber, who can not only sell jerseys by the truckload for a new team and still contribute on the court, averaging 26.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game in 2025-26, can find suitors just about anywhere and just because he's the franchise icon doesn't mean that he's tied to the franchise forever, especially if the franchise is going downhill with no plans to stop it.

Now is truly make-or-break time for the Warriors and convincing Curry that Golden State is still the best place for him well enough that Curry signs an extension would instill at least some of the confidence in the rest of the team and the fanbase that Golden State's recent struggles are a momentary skid, rather than a generational downfall.
