Ben Johnson shares Bears QB Caleb Williams' approach in Year 3

It is honestly a miracle that Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams played so well in his first year under head coach Ben Johnson after how much of a debacle Williams’ first season in the NFL was with who was on the Bears’ coaching staff.

Williams established himself as one of the most clutch quarterbacks in the NFL while also setting a single-season franchise passing record with 3,942 yards as Chicago went from worst-to-first with an 11-6 record, NFC North title and a playoff win over the Green Bay Packers.

Going into his second year under Johnson, Williams has been more serious in practice so far and the players have taken notice according to Ben Johnson.

"I’ve seen a very composed person every time he steps into the building," Johnson said. "This guy might’ve had a little bit of goofy to him a year ago, and I use that term with love.  And now you just see a more serious player and intent every time I’m around him.  And I think his teammates feel that as well.  He’s getting to the practice field early, he’s making sure his part is taken care of, he’s warmed up, he’s ready to go, he’s staying after with the guys after practice.  And so he’s taken a lot of pride in his approach right now.  I think it’s a great thing.  So, I think he continues to grow up and he’s going to be a huge leader for us this year."

Williams stepped up as a leader last season, leading the Bears to a league-leading seven fourth quarter comebacks; he also had two fourth quarter comebacks in his first season with Chicago.

Johnson has higher expectations for the Bears this year. While Chicago was thrilling to watch last season, Johnson is looking for more dominant victories from the Bears. That will require Williams leading this offense like he did last season as well as the defense stepping up since they were a bigger problem last year. Besides the turnovers, they were statistically one of the worst units in the league.
