2027 Formula 2 Car Revealed: Same Dallara Chassis, New Wings Designed for Closer Racing

Formula 2 has revealed the car that will serve as the final rung before Formula 1 for the 2027, 2028, and 2029 seasons. The debut took place today in the Formula 1 paddock at Italy’s Autodromo Nazionale Monza, giving the championship a new-looking machine without the expense of an entirely new platform.

The 2027 model retains the Dallara chassis from the previous version, specifically the one used in 2026, with the most substantial changes coming from the redesigned front and rear wings. Just like the new Formula 1 regulations, these new aerodynamics aim to enable drivers to race closer, promoting more competitive racing rather than isolated driving. A miracle was not required. Just better airflow. And hopefully it works.
What Changes on the 2027 F2 Car
The bodywork now takes more visual inspiration from current F1 machinery, but the mechanical package remains mostly the same. The powertrain remains a 3.4-liter single-turbocharged V6 engine sourced from Mecachrome, producing 620 horsepower at 8,750 rpm and delivering 570 Nm of torque at 6,000 rpm. The fly-by-wire accelerator remains part of the package, and the engine is scheduled for a rebuild after 8,000 km.
Aramco’s advanced sustainable fuel will continue to power the car. The fuel was first introduced successfully to Formula 2 in 2025. Pirelli, which has supplied every F2 car since 2017, also remains the championship’s sole tire supplier with rubber developed specifically for the series.
The more interesting upgrade is hidden inside the car. For the 2027 season, an on-board starter has been introduced, allowing drivers to restart the engine if it stalls for whatever reason. Hewland revised the existing gearbox to accommodate the system.
FIA Formula 2 continues to uphold the braking, steering, and cockpit design specifications already started in 2024. Marelli’s electronic and hydraulic systems remain in place as well, including the EM Motorsport Marshalling system. And the survival cell constructed by Dallara uses a carbon-aluminum honeycomb composite and Zylon panels.
The Dallara construction continues front and back. The front and rear wings use carbon structures, while the bodywork is built from carbon-Kevlar honeycomb panels. The chassis dimensions are 5,284 mm in length, 1,900 mm in width, 1,097 mm in height when including the FOM roll-hoop camera, and it has a wheelbase of 3,135 mm.
The F1 Ladder Needs to be Strong

The first prototype ran at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya last June, followed by joint development work with Dallara that included wind-tunnel and aerodynamic testing. Teams will receive a first kit in December 2026 and a second in January 2027.
F2’s job is to prepare drivers for Formula 1, but it also has to produce racing worth watching. Keeping the proven chassis controls spending while changing the airflow and adding a starter is a sensible evolution. The 2027 car does not need to reinvent Formula 2. It needs to make the existing talent easier to see.
