Terrence McDowell had a night for the record books. The junior tailback rushed for 351 yards and six touchdowns on over 40 carries on Friday night for Tamaqua (1-1), leading the Blue Raiders to a 40-27 victory over Schuylkill Haven (0-2).
The Blue Raiders as a whole totaled nearly 500 yards of total offense in the game including over 450 rushing yards.
For Schuylkill Haven, itsusual rushing attack was negated throughout the evening by Tamaqua’s defense. But quarterback Bradyn Diehl threw over 200 yards on five completions. Three of those five completions went for touchdowns with Chase Yoder, Colton Reber, and Noah Runkle all finding the end zone.
Both teams are slated for rivalry matchups next Friday as Tamaqua hosts Marian and Schuylkill Haven will host Blue Mountain.
Southern Lehigh 45, Blue Mountain 36
While Blue Mountain (1-1) didn’t emerge victorious against the defending PIAA Class 4A state champions on Friday night, the Eagles passed the test.
The Eagles narrowly fell to the Southern Lehigh Spartans (2-0) 45-36 after leading 28-27 late in the second quarter.
Blue Mountain quarterback Cohen Kirby had one of the best games of his high school career, completing 18-of-27 passing attempts for 309 yards for a trio of touchdowns while adding a fourth touchdown on the ground.
Kole Luckenbill was on the receiving end of two of those touchdown passes en route to a nine reception, 199-yard night while West Virginia commit Chase Guers recorded a touchdown of his own. Guers finished with five receptions for 71 yards and a score.
Eagles’ running back Brody Foose had a fine day on the ground with 15 carries for 104 yards and a score.
While the Blue Mountain offense shined, the defense struggled to slow the Spartans. Southern Lehigh had over 500 yards of total offense to Blue Mountain’s 452 with 205 rushing yards and 299 passing yards.
Quarterback Colton Sams went toe-to-toe with Kirby, completing 15-of-21 attempts for 299 yards and four touchdowns.
Blue Mountain will look to get back in the win column next Friday night against rival Schuylkill Haven.
Mount Carmel Area 47, Pottsville 20
Mount Carmel (2-0) for a second-straight week defeated a Schuylkill League foe. After disposing of Schuylkill Haven last week, the Red Tornadoes defeated Pottsville (0-2) on Friday night 47-20.
Mount Carmel came close to the half century mark in total yards with 491, including 473 rushing yards on the ground. Jaylen Delaney was the star of the show for Mount Carmel with over 200 rushing yards, his backfield mate Cooper Karycki had a big day of his own as well with 186 rushing yards.
For Pottsville, Shay Strencosky led the way with 106 receiving yards and 65 rushing yards. Strencosky found the end zone in the loss for the Crimson Tide on an 80-yard reception in the third quarter.
Quarterback Andrew Allen had a solid night, completing 8-of-13 passing attempts for 134 yards.
Pottsville will be on the road in week three, traveling to play Pleasant Valley on Thursday night. Mount Carmel will take a break from Schuylkill League opponents, facing Milton next Friday before taking on North Schuylkill in week four.
Tri-Valley 25, Halifax 0
Tri-Valley (1-1) picked up its first win of the season, defeating Halifax (0-2) 25-0.
Tri-Valley will be back in action next Friday night when they host Upper Dauphin Area.
Jim Thorpe 42, Minersville 10
Jim Thorpe (1-1) jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead over Minersville (1-1) in the first quarter and never looked back on Friday night.
The Olympians led 28-0 at halftime and 42-0 in the fourth quarter before Minersville scored 10-points unanswered to end the game, including a 52-yard field goal from Jordan Bowers.
Mahanoy Area 41, Catasauqua 34
Mahanoy Area (1-1) picked up win No. 1 of the 2026 season on Friday night on the road against Colonial League foe Catasauqua (1-1).
The Golden Bears will look to improve to 2-1 next Friday night when they host Pine Grove (0-2).
