Malachi Toney breaks Miami football record with Week 1 Heisman showing

The Miami Hurricanes kicked off the 2026 college football season with a dominating win and Malachi Toney is making an early Heisman Trophy case.
Week 1 officially launches the entire college football campaign after only a handful of programs debuted last week. However, last season’s runners’ up, Miami, came out with a strong showing against Stanford.

The Hurricanes’ 45-6 win over the Cardinal was certainly impressive, but Toney’s individual effort stole the show. The standout wide receiver broke free for three touchdowns and 234 yards on 12 receptions.
Toney’s amazing effort broke a 42-year record for most receiving yards in a game, previously held by Eddie Brown. Meanwhile, the Heisman hopeful did so in less than three quarters of action with the blowout win.

Toney’s already in the national spotlight as one of the country’s elite wide receivers alongside Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith and Texas star Cam Coleman.
However, transfer quarterback Darian Mensah lit up Stanford’s defense with over 400 passing yards and five touchdowns in his first game since leaving Duke.
Toney’s epic pass-catching performance even included him making his own Heisman case. The star wideout showed off the iconic Heisman pose on three different occasions during his touchdown celebrations.

It’s clear that the connection between Mensah and Toney already exists just one week into the season. If that bond continues to grow throughout the year it’s very possible that one or both young men could appear in New York City once December rolls around for Heisman proceedings.
