With six days until Week 1, let's look back at the 2006 season for the Cardinals.
A look back at the 2006 season for the Cardinals
The 2006 season did in coach Dennis Green. They won their opener but then lost eight games in a row before going 4-3 the rest of the way. They finished 5-11. THey had one of the worst defenses in the league, ranking 29th in both yards allowed and points allowed.
Offensively, they were below average.
It was the season where the Cardinals blew a late lead against the eventual NFC champion Chicago Bears and Green had a famous postgame tirade.
There was some hope, though, as Matt Leinart fell to the 10th pick in the draft, and the Cardinals were able to draft the former Heisman Trophy winner.
2006 individual honors, leaders
The Cardinals had two Pro Bowlers in 2006:
- WR Anquan Boldin
- S Adrian Wilson
Wilson was also a second-team All-Pro.
Kurt Warner started the season as the starting quarterback but was benched in favor of Leinart. Leinart started 11 games and led the team in passing with 2,547 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Warner passed for 1,377 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions.
Edgerrin James led the team in rushing with 1,159 yards and six touchdowns. What is crazy is that Leinart was second on the team in rushing with 49 yards. The team had 179 rushing yards outside of James' numbers.
Boldin had 83 receptions for 1,203 yards and four scores. Larry Fitzgerald was next with 69 catches for 946 yards and six touchdowns.
Linebacker Gerald Hayes led the team with 93 total tackles. Wilson's four interceptions were the most on the team, and cornerback Eric Green broke up a team-leading 12 passes. Chike Okeafor had a team-leading 8.5 sacks, followed by Karlos Dansby with eight.
