1 major question chases Bengals QB Joe Burrow into regular season

With Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, it’s all about health.

That’s the big question. Dedicated fans know it. Even casual fans from around the NFL-sphere know it, too.

As expected, this dominates conversations around Burrow, even when he’s getting predicted to win NFL MVP

Another example: Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer recently talked with anonymous NFL executives to rank the quarterbacks in the NFL this year. Right off the bat, the writeup mentions that with Burrow, “health is the only question.”

“This is Burrow’s fifth consecutive year ranking in the top five,” Breer wrote. “He finished fifth coming off his Super Bowl sophomore season, then third in 2023, and second the past two years. His weapons are still elite, the line is better than people think, and the defense should be improved, all of which is why he believes he’ll be able to play a different sort of game this year. ‘He’s as good a pocket passer as there is in the NFL,” said an assistant GM. “It’s just been health.’”

We could nitpick and say that Burrow’s ability to play well from under center is another major question. He’s said, as have others, that they want to do it more. It’s part of adapting to what NFL defenses are doing to counter him. The early returns in the preseason were ugly.

But even then, that doesn’t really matter if Burrow isn’t on the field, right? Everyone knows the injury woes, yet he’s still ranked fourth in the minds of NFL execs right now. His ceiling is No. 1 overall, but the health has to come first.
