49ers rookie WR De'Zhaun Stribling exits early against Rams with injury

Welcome to the always-injured San Francisco 49ers, De'Zhaun Stribling.
The rookie wide receiver who was 49ers' first draft pick was carted to a locker room after he exited with a left ankle injury Thursday midway through the second quarter of their regular-season opener against the Rams in Melbourne, Australia. He was ruled out from returning, the team announced.

Stribling went down and grabbed at his ankle after making a cut on an intermediate route. The No. 33 pick was not placing his full weight on his injured leg as two trainers assisted him to the medical tent.
Stribling, who dealt with hamstring tightness and a shoulder injury in training camp, returned to the game after he suffered an ankle injury in the first quarter and was announced as questionable to return.
After going down again, Stribling was carted to the area of the Melbourne Cricket Ground where the Rams' locker room is located, possibly to have X-rays.
Meanwhile, No. 2 tight end Jake Tonges suffered a right knee injury later in the second quarter and was carted away after reaching the sideline. Tonges was ruled questionable to return. Tonges needed assistance exiting the field after he leg-whipped pass rusher Myles Garrett. Tonges ducked and hit Garrett's thigh with the back of his lower right leg.
Tonges' injury is particularly notable given the 49ers are expected to monitor All-Pro tight end George Kittle's playing time Thursday. Kittle returned to practice on Aug. 23 after suffering a torn Achilles in January in the 49ers' wild-card win at Philadelphia. The 49ers' No. 3 tight end, Luke Farrell, is a six-year veteran who had 11 catches for 85 yards in his debut season with the 49ers in 2025.
