Dylan Larkin reporting to Red Wings training camp, but not as captain

DETROIT — Dylan Larkin still is a Red Wing. He's just no longer the captain.
Larkin is set to report to Red Wings training next week amid a time of uncertainty within the organization, which still hasn't hired a general manager and still hasn't resolved the future of Larkin, who requested a trade this summer.

Over the past couple of weeks, Red Wings leadership and I have had several in-depth discussions. I've appreciated those candid conversations, and I will be at training camp with my teammates. When new leadership is in place, we'll talk further about the direction of the team. We will keep those conversations prviate, and I will keep my focus on the season ahead and on the guys in that room.

Dylan is under contract as a member of the Detroit Red Wings. Any conversations regarding his future with the club will take place privately when a new hockey operations leader has been named. As such, we will not comment any further on this matter.
The Red Wings will begin the 2026-27 season with a captain being named. Any further discussions or decisions regarding this topic will be made one new hockey operations leadership is in place.
Larkin, 30, a Waterford native and Michigan alum, has spent his entire career with the Red Wings, but he requested a trade this offseason amid friction with then-general manager Steve Yzerman — and amid the team's long playoff drought. Yzerman stepped down as general manager in July, and his replacement still hasn't been named.
In January 2021, Larkin was named the Red Wings captain. In March 2023, Larkin signed an eight-year contract extension worth nearly $70 million.
Red Wings training camp is set for Sept. 17-20 at Little Caesars Arena. The first preseason game is Sept. 21 at Columbus. The regular season starts Oct. 2 at home against the New York Rangers.
