There were plenty of great performances from around the local gridiron as area football teams opened their seasons. Tommy Cassell picked a few of the best performances for readers to vote on to decide the Hometeam Football Player of the Week.
These picks were selected from performances reported by area coaches to the Hometeam Scoreboard. Coaches or administrators are encouraged to report game results and highlights each night by calling the T&G sports desk at 508-793-9350 or emailing [email protected].
Richard Abalo, Burncoat
Abalo rushed for 86 yards and a touchdown and also made 13 tackles to lead the Burncoat defense in a 34-6 beatdown of Bourne.
Sawyer Barlow, Narragansett
This senior led the Warriors’ defense with seven tackles and a pair of sacks, with one of his sacks resulting in a safety on defense during Narragansett’s 29-6 victory over Monty Tech.
Mo Rodney Daigle, Northbridge
This senior running back scored five touchdowns (which tied for a school record set in 2014 by Koby Schofer) and rushed for 288 yards in the first three quarters to lead the Rams to a 46-14 win over Clinton.
Victor De Oliveira and Harry Manning, Algonquin
De Oliveria (128 rushing yards) and Manning (134 rushing yards) helped the Titans rumble past Nashoba for a 21-6 victory.
Liam Deso, St. John’s
This junior captain delivered big time for the Pioneers, rushing the ball 22 times for 101 yards and two TDs while adding an interception on defense in a 34-18 victory over Leominster.
Logan Dome, Hudson
Dome delivered all four touchdowns — two passing to Mason Bastien (25 yards) and Brayden Folan (15 yards) and two rushing (both 4 yards) — to help the Hawks clip Shrewsbury, 26-14.
Tanner Gaffney, Wachusett
Gaffney garnered 252 all-purpose yards with punt returns of 66 and 48 yards for touchdowns while carrying the ball seven times for 120 yards on offense and adding nine tackles on defense in the Mountaineers’ 35-28 victory over Franklin.
Mason Hubley, Millbury
In his first start for the Woolies, this junior quarterback completed 17 of 29 passes for 290 yards and three touchdown passes in the Woolies’ thrilling 41-36 comeback win over Leicester.
Dom Jamison, Gardner
This junior QB completed 12 of 18 passes for 283 yards and tossed four touchdown passes in the first half to lead the visiting Wildcats to a 42-14 win over Quabbin.
Nick Jordan, Grafton
This junior tailback tallied 162 yards on 23 carries and scored a touchdown in the Gators’ 20-13 overtime win over Westwood.
Caleb LaFreniere, St. Bernard’s
This junior QB completed eight of his nine passes — including four touchdown tosses — in the Bernardians’ 37-6 beatdown of Lunenburg.
Darius Legere, Oakmont
Legere rushed 26 times for 155 yards and a touchdown, and picked off a pass and returned it for a touchdown on defense, as the visiting Spartans picked up a 28-19 win over Nauset to open the season.
Luke Lewis, West Boylston
This senior hauled in 3 catches for 116 yards (62, 10 and 44), all for touchdowns from quarterback Cason Orciani (173 passing yards and 4 total TDs), in the Lions’ 33-20 victory over Bartlett. Lewis also added four tackles on defense.
Teddy Marino, Westborough
Marino tallied 14 tackles and a half sack, while adding the game-winning score with a 7-yard TD run in the fourth quarter, to help the Rangers record a 20-14 win over Ashland.
Joey McNamara, Millbury
This senior wide receiver/defensive back had a big opener for the Woolies, hauling in five passes for 91 yards and three TDs while adding seven tackles on defense in Millbury’s 41-36 victory over Leicester.
Sam Moshier, Nipmuc
Moshier mustered 137 yards on 17 carries as the running back bookended the scoring for Nipmuc with a 20-yard TD run in the first quarter and a 3-yard TD run in the fourth quarter to help the Coyotes capture a 34-12 defeat of David Prouty.
Logan Nystrom, Assabet
Nystrom rushed 27 times for 177 yards and scored on a 27-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter to help the visiting Aztecs hold off Worcester Tech to open the season with an 18-13 win.
Shea Paxton, Uxbridge
This junior QB tossed three touchdown passes, including scores of 55 and 65 yards to Bradley Dwight, as the host Spartans blanked Maynard, 35-0.
Chase Reyes, Auburn
This senior quarterback threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score as the visiting Rockets beat BVT, 35-20.
Jaxon Ruth, Leicester
This senior QB compiled four touchdown runs, and rushed in the go-ahead two-point conversion in the final few minutes, before his team lost in the final minute to Millbury.
Jayden Stone, North
Stone recorded a 21-yard rushing touchdown and returned a fumble 60 yards for a score as the host Polar Bears beat Abby Kelley, 28-8, at Foley Stadium.
Tyler Truax, Tantasqua
Truax tallied four catches for 110 yards and two receiving touchdowns as visiting Tantasqua toppled Marlborough, 33-7, in a season opener.
Logan Vega, Shepherd Hill
Vega (16 carries, 145 yards) rushed for touchdown runs of 15, 1 and 46 yards to help the Rams run past South, 38-14, in a season-opening victory.
