The New York Mets’ current three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles is filled enough with emotions as it is amid Pete Alonso’s first return to Citi Field since signing a five-year, $155 million contract with the Orioles this past offseason. But Alonso showed on Tuesday just what exactly the Mets have been missing in 2026, as he hit a home run in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game for the Orioles at 3-3.

Alonso worked a 2-0 count against his former teammate Kodai Senga, with the Mets starter turned reliever throwing him two forkballs to start the at-bat. This gave the Orioles slugger the timing of that pitch, as he unloaded on a 2-0 forkball and deposited it towards the stands in left field for the 300th home run of his career.

Despite being an opposing player, Alonso got a warm welcome from Mets fans who have missed him dearly as they continue to express their disappoint towards the front office for letting one of the most consistent players in MLB go in free agency.

Alonso even received a curtain call, and it’s rare to see a player be as beloved as he was in this very moment. The sentiment was the same on social media, with Mets fans expressing their love for their former first baseman all while feeling the pain of seeing him work his magic with another team.

“Unpopular opinion…. Pete Alonso was one of the most beloved Mets in recent history. He is a great person. The Mets season is mathematically over and this is a meaningless game. I see no issue cheering a guy who hit the most homeruns in Mets history for hitting #300 at Citi,” X user @BruceGamsey wrote.
