Texas RB Hollywood Smothers expected to be a game-time decision vs. Tennessee

The status of senior running back Hollywood Smothers remains unclear for Saturday’s matchup between the No. 1 Texas Longhorns and the No. 14 Tennessee Volunteers at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville with On3 reporting on Friday that Smothers is expected to be a game-time decision with a lower-leg injury.

The 5’11, 196-pounder was officially listed as questionable on the SEC-mandated injury reports released on Wednesday and Thursday.
A Charlotte product who started his career at Oklahoma before transferring to NC State, Smothers won the starting role in preseason camp and quickly emerged as the team’s lead back over fifth-year Raleek Brown and freshman Derek Cooper. Through three games, Smothers leads the Horns with 198 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 41 carries.
The potential that Smothers isn’t able to play or is limited against Tennessee comes as Texas is still trying to find its explosiveness in the running game and offense overall — since Smothers ripped off a 45-yard run on the team’s first play from scrimmage this season, the Longhorns have not produced a run longer than 21 yards. In the last two games, the longest run by Texas was a 20-yard scramble by quarterback Arch Manning against UTSA.
