How J.J. McCarthy can make history with Giants

What can the Giants reasonably expect from J.J. McCarthy, considering his failures in Minnesota?
Well, there seems like a more-than-decent chance he will get an opportunity to start at some point this season, especially if Jameis Winston continues to struggle.

The Giants didn’t trade a fifth-round draft pick to the Vikings for McCarthy (the No. 10 overall selection in 2024) just to sit him all year.
McCarthy started 10 games for the Vikings (all last year). That puts him in some lackluster company, along with Paxton Lynch, Trey Lance and Johnny Manziel.
According to Elias, those are the only four first-round quarterbacks over the past 25 years to start 10 or fewer games for the team that drafted them.
But now, McCarthy has a chance to make some history with the Giants. He can become the first quarterback among that group to buck the downward trend — and resurrect his career.

Lynch started four games with the Broncos from 2016-17 and never appeared in another NFL game after that, though he did have subsequent brief stints with Seattle and Pittsburgh.
Lance got four total starts with the 49ers from 2021-22. He started one game for Dallas in 2024 and another for the Chargers in 2025. Lance is still with the Chargers as Justin Herbert’s backup.
Manziel was a total disaster while starting eight games in Cleveland from 2014-15. He never got another NFL job after the 2015 season, largely due to a litany of off-field issues.
So if McCarthy gains even a little bit of traction as the Giants’ starter this season, he will exceed what those other three first-round busts did after their first NFL stops — though that’s obviously a low bar to clear.
