Both Managers Are Under Pressure
👀 Could this weekend be MAKE or BREAK for Michael Carrick and Roberto De Zerbi? 😬

This is a game neither manager wants to lose. Michael Carrick took over United last season and led them to a third-place finish and a return to the Champions League. Unfortunately, United have won only two of their first seven matches in all competitions this season. They also threw away a 2-0 lead against Brighton in the EFL Cup.
De Zerbi’s position looks even more precarious. Tottenham survived relegation on the final day of last season, spent heavily over the summer, and have still started with no wins in five games. A bad result at Old Trafford would deepen the questions at both clubs.

Spurs went four league games without scoring to start the season, a first in the club’s history. Their only two points came from 0-0 draws with Nottingham Forest and Everton, and both of their league goals so far arrived late in a 3-2 home defeat to Aston Villa.
After that Villa loss, De Zerbi said the performance meant “we can’t lose this game in this way.” The issue isn’t possession. Spurs keep the ball and play through the half-spaces, but the final pass hasn’t arrived.
Man Utd Team News And Injuries
Carrick’s squad is better than it looked a week ago, but left back is a worry.
- Out: Manuel Ugarte (knee, long-term after surgery) and Benjamin Sesko (shin).
- Doubtful or bench-only: Matthijs de Ligt (back) is a bench option at most after a long layoff. Patrick Dorgu (hamstring) and Noussair Mazraoui (back) both left international duty early.
- Expected available: Marcus Rashford, substituted with a knock at Fulham, and Kobbie Mainoo, who withdrew from England’s squad, are both projected to start. The Mainoo withdrawal is understood to have been about workload rather than a serious injury.
- Good news: Carlos Baleba played his first minutes for the club in a behind-closed-doors friendly and is in contention, while Senne Lammens keeps his place in goal.
With Sesko out, Matheus Cunha leads the line.
Tottenham Team News and Injuries
Tottenham’s XI hinges on two Dutch centre-backs passing fitness checks.
- Out: Pedro Porro (hamstring, targeting a return later this month), Xavi Simons (knee), Wilson Odobert (knee) and Mykhailo Mudryk (ankle).
- Fitness concerns: Jan Paul van Hecke (foot) and Micky van de Ven (hand knock) both picked up knocks on international duty, though both are expected to be fine. If either misses out, Marcos Senesi or Tosin Adarabioyo is the cover.
- Returning soon: Dejan Kulusevski is training fully after more than 500 days out and could return to a matchday squad this month, initially from the bench.
With Porro out, Archie Gray is expected to deputise at right-back.
Man Utd Create Plenty, But Struggle to Protect Leads
This is the angle that could decide the game. United led the Premier League in shots (113) and touches in the opposition box (182) through five games, but converted just 7.1 percent of their chances, according to RotoWire’s numbers. When they do lose control, it tends to happen on turnovers in midfield: Fulham’s opener came from exactly that before Cunha’s 89th-minute equalizer.
Against a Tottenham side that has struggled to score, United’s bigger risk may not be creating chances. It is what happens when they lead and the game opens up.
Man Utd vs Tottenham Predicted Lineups
Man Utd predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Lammens; Dalot, Maguire, Martínez, Shaw; Mainoo, Tielemans; Mbeumo, Fernandes, Rashford; Cunha.
Tottenham predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Kinsky; Gray, van Hecke, van de Ven, Udogie; Bentancur, Tonali; Savinho, Kudus, Marmoush; Solanke.
These are predicted lineups based on Wednesday’s team news, so check for confirmed XIs about an hour before kickoff.

Tottenham have won four of the last six meetings, including last season’s Europa League final, but they haven’t won at Old Trafford since September 2024. Man Utd won the most recent meeting 2-0 in February, with Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes scoring after Cristian Romero was sent off. There hasn’t been a 0-0 draw between the sides in their last 27 meetings, so goals are a safe expectation.
Key Matchups
Bruno Fernandes vs Bentancur and Tonali: Fernandes has four goals and an assist in six games for Man Utd. If Spurs’ double pivot stops him from turning between the lines, United’s chance volume drops.
Matheus Cunha vs van de Ven and van Hecke: Both Tottenham centre-backs are carrying knocks, which makes Cunha’s runs in behind a real test.
Bryan Mbeumo vs Destiny Udogie: Udogie likes to get forward from left-back, leaving space behind him for Mbeumo on the counter.
Man Utd vs Tottenham Odds
Man Utd are home favourites at roughly -145 to -155, with Tottenham around +330 to +340 and the draw near +300 across major sportsbooks, according to RotoWire’s odds comparison. Odds move before kickoff, so check current prices.
End Of My Man Utd Rant
Three factors point toward a United win. First, they’re at home against a side that hasn’t won in the league. Second, Tottenham’s attack has been the most toothless in the division. Third, United’s underlying attacking numbers are far better than their results.
Spurs still have enough quality in Kudus, Savinho and Solanke to hurt Man Utd on the break, and the hosts have shown they can be careless in midfield. Other previews are split: NBC Sports expects a 2-1 United win, while To The Lane And Back predicts a 2-2 draw. The most likely outcome is a narrow home win.
Prediction: Man Utd 2-1 Tottenham
What’s next? United visit Atlético Madrid in the Champions League on October 13, while Tottenham host Coventry City on October 19.
