Matthias Jaissle and his players looking to pick up where they left off before the international break.
The new Newcastle United boss having overseen four wins, two draws and a single defeat so far.
The very most recent match was that hard fought 2-1 victory over Hull City.
United the dominant team for an hour or so but in the closing stages having to battle to keep their deserved three points.
A lack of options on the bench massively impacted that Hull match and a huge positive that Matthias Jaissle is hoping to have at least three or four of the nine injured players who were unavailable for that victory, back in his matchday squad at Coventry.
Coventry City lost their first four Premier League games, conceding ten goals and scoring none. However, their last match saw them get a great 1-0 away victory at Forest.
Matthias Jaissle’s side have claimed a place in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup and if winning on Monday night are guaranteed to be top six, whilst if other results go their way on Sunday it could see Newcastle United top four if defeating Coventry City.
As a reminder, this was the Newcastle United team v Hull City:
Hornicek, Thiaw, Botman, Hall, Lewis Miley, Steur, Willock, Murphy, Wissa, Barnes, Fernandez-Pardo
On Thursday at his pre-match press conference, Matthias Jaissle made clear that Nico Gonzalez and Joelinton will be back available on Monday, plus hopefully at least one or two others from the treatment room.
Taking everything into consideration, in my opinion….
This is my predicted Newcastle United team v Coventry City:
Hornicek, Lewis Miley, Thiaw, Botman, Hall, Gonzalez, Joelinton, Willock, Wissa, Barnes, Fernandez-Pardo
If my prediction is proved correct, this would mean two changes:
IN – Gonzalez, Joelinton
OUT – Steur, Murphy
I think Nico Gonzalez comes back in for sure and whilst we don’t know the exact condition of those recovering from injury, I also believe Joelinton will be starting, with likely a physical battle againstCoventry City.
My guesstimate is that whilst Amar Dedic may well be back in the matchday squad he won’t be in a position to start, so I see Lewis Miley continuing at right-back and he was excellent there against Hull City.
Sean Steur was really good against Hull but I think Matthias Jaissle will be looking after the 18-year-old and have him back on the bench. Jacob Murphy wasn’t terrible against the Tigers but he hasn’t really convinced this season in terms of seen as a first choice player.
With the suggested changes maybe it will need the Head Coach to tinker a bit with his formation and tactics but it will give Newcastle United a more solid look.
United actually played really well for that first hour or so against Hull City before Sean Steur was forced off with cramp and not great options on the bench as a number of players were clearly fatigued. If our lot had taken more of the chances and of course if Wissa had made it 3-0 with that penalty, then it would have been a very comfortable win.
It will be great to see William Osula back if he makes it but Matias Fernandez-Pardo did an unbelievable job defending from the front against Hull until his non-stop sprinting eventually saw him eventually forced off with cramp like Steur.
With more options in his squad and of course on the bench, I think Matthias Jaissle and his Newcastle United team can notch another win on Monday night.
