Coach Mike Vrabel’s New England Patriots have been bitten by the injury bug in recent weeks with wide receiver AJ Brown receiving his official status and running back TreyVeyon Henderson making an admission about his high ankle sprain.

Rhamondre Stevenson has filled in admirably at the running back position but Vrabel and company are still on the hunt for running back help according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

“Patriots tried out three running backs: Ulysses Bentley, Terrell Jennings and Josh Pitsenberger,” Schefter wrote in regards to the Pats’ recent frenzy of free agent activity.

Bentley played in one game with the Colts last season and attempted a rush that resulted in zero yards. Jennings played with the Patriots in 2024 and 2025, compiling 106 yards on 36 attempts including one rushing touchdown. Pitsenbeger signed with the Texans as an undrafted free agent out of Yale this past May.

The Patriots are ramping up preparations for Week 6’s battle with the New York Jets in Foxborough, Massachusetts’ Gillette Stadium. McDaniels’ offense has scored over 20 points in three of the last four weeks including 45 in a 45-17 win over the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 5. Quarterback Drake Maye passed for 374 yards while Rhamondre Stevenson led the Patriots in rushing with 64 yards.

The Jets are a defensive-minded team coach by former Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn and will try to limit the Maye-led offense in hopes of scoring an upset. The Patriots signed a former Chargers running back leading up to Week 6 as they continue to prepare. If Henderson can’t play, new faces could see carries for the first time in a Patriots uniform as Vrabel’s team looks for its fourth win of the 2026 NFL season.
