In his address, Prof. Deepak Kumar Srivastava, Director of IIM Ranchi, emphasized that while management education often focuses on business strategy and operational success, it is equally important to understand the institution that underpins them. The moral compass that helps leaders navigate ethical dilemmas, ambiguity, and conflict. Tracing the origin of organizational core values to individual leaders and enduring legacies, Prof. Srivastava highlighted the ideal of Trusteeship shared by leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri. The core message of Trusteeship is simple: we do not truly own our wealth, power, or positions. We are simply taking care of them for a short time, and tomorrow, someone else will take our place.
The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Anil Shastri, former Union Minister and son of Lal Bahadur Shastri. Reflecting on the moral foundations of public life, he emphasized that ethical conduct, humility, intellectual honesty, and clarity of thought remain the non-negotiable pillars of effective leadership. During the session, Anil Shastri discussed the importance of trusteeship and the responsibility that accompanies positions of authority. He highlighted how leadership should be guided by a sense of duty, integrity, and concern for the larger public good rather than personal gain. Mr. Shastri also marked the importance of understanding people, making timely decisions, and remaining committed to one's principles, particularly during challenging circumstances.
Reflecting on Lal Bahadur Shastri’s leadership during the 1965 India-Pakistan war, he underscored the former Prime Minister’s ability to lead with determination while maintaining a strong moral compass. He also shared personal anecdotes that illustrated Shastri’s humility and his commitment to values in everyday life, demonstrating that ethical leadership is reflected not only in major decisions but also in ordinary actions. The session reinforced the idea that sustainable leadership is built on character, accountability, and commitment to public service.
